Chapter Nine

There was knock on the door and Mary answered it. Bret strolled inside. “Oh, there you are. Next time let me know before you go off on your own.”

Cadence stood and faced him. “First off, you left first and didn’t tell me where you were going, and I only came next door to see how Mary was making out.”

“Men aren’t supposed to have to tell their wives where they’re going.”

Gasps split the air.

“If you feel that way, it explains why you’ve never married before,” Cadence said.

“Because I never wanted to. I think of romance in a different way. I think a woman should be wooed and courted. Here we are married and I don’t even know much about you, other than you’re McKenna’s sister.”

“And you never will, with your attitude,” she said, sitting on the bed in a huff.

“Let’s forget all about this for now. In the future, I will tell you where I’m going, if it makes you happy. Right now, I’d like a bite to eat. Dolly has made us dinner downstairs. I didn’t even know she did that for guests.”

“I was hoping to have a look around town,” Cadence said.

“We will later, I assure you, but you can’t tell me that you’re not tired.”

“I am. Come along, Mary,” she said, wanting all the support she could get, since so far, today, Bret had made a habit of putting his foot in his mouth.

They descended the stairs. Dolly stood there with a huge smile on her face, then led them into a dining room that looked out of place for Nevada, with the way it was furnished with a finished table and chairs. Even the walls were covered with textured paper. Where did Dolly live before Reno?

Bret held their chairs out for them and sat down across from Cadence. Even Dolly sat down, and a maid came into the room, setting down fried chicken, mashed potatoes, corn, and biscuits. Butter and honey was on the center of the table.

“I hope you like tea,” Dolly said.

“I do,” Cadence said.

“Do you have whiskey?” Bret asked with a wink. When Cadence gave him a look, he added, “I was just kidding, dear.”

“Men and their wit certainly can be lost on us women,” Dolly said, scooping mashed potatoes out and setting them on her plate.

The food was passed around and Cadence sighed in delight at how tender the chicken was. Before she had a chance to comment on it, Dolly explained, “I have an actual cook who used to work for a fancy hotel in Goldberg. I was able to lure her from there because she was looking for a change.”

“I’m happy about that. I was thinking we’d have to eat at one of the restaurants in town,” Cadence said.

“Nothing wrong with that, if you don’t mind sitting next to rowdy men. There’s a new bunch that arrived today, real rough necks. I’d stick close, unless you’re with your man, and that goes for both of you ladies.”

Cadence gulped. “That sounds like sound advice and mirrors that of my husband, but I had hoped to do a little shopping, at least.
